Welcome to the Oban Photographic Club!
We are based on the beautiful West Coast of Scotland in Oban, known as the Gateway to the Isles. The club attracts members of all ages and abilities, and welcomes new members and visitors at all times.
Our members represent all levels of experience, from enthusiastic beginners to seasoned stalwarts and use all types of technology and formats from compact to SLRs, both digital and film. If you don't use a camera but enjoy taking photographs on your phone you'll be made just as welcome.
OBAN PHOTOGRAPHIC CLUB – one of the oldest clubs in Scotland – boasts some 59 years of photographic interchange and socialising. But we have a modern outlook on the art – always ready to learn new skills, always striving to keep the programme fresh and always welcoming new members. We are fortunate to live in one of the most scenic areas of Scotland – the mountains, lochs and the glens with that superb ever-changing quality of light are a landscape photographer’s delight. Oban is situated on a wonderful stretch of the Argyll coastline with ferry and air access to many islands, both locally and further afield; the busy harbour and local beaches, cliffs, and marine and bird life add another exciting layer to the photographic possibilities. For those interested in street photography, the many opportunities on hand during the busy visitor season are something else to keep the shutters clicking!
We meet weekly from October to March at Rockfield and have a varied programme of competitions, guest speakers and occasional tutorials. There’s always a lively banter on club nights and a warm and friendly atmosphere. A good measure of humour is always to hand!
March 2021 Due to the current situation and the need for social distancing we are unable to meet at Rockfield for the foreseeable future, but we hope to keep in touch with our members and work on the principle of 'Keep calm and carry on taking wonderful photographs'! The club intends to continue with the competitions as already agreed but with projected images only, so the only print competition will be the SPF which is judged elsewhere. The club competition's winning images will be displayed on this website as usual, but the scores and judges' comments will be displayed only on our private Flickr page, on the relevant evening. This page will be visible to club members only.
Nobody knows when we'll be able to return to our usual meetings, but we'll be working on various ways to continue with our other activities; many judges are keen to use Zoom, so that's an alternative to a taped judging. We'll endeavour to keep everyone up-to-date with news both here and on our Facebook page, which can be accessed through the link below -
So here's hoping that life in Oban Photographic Club will continue enthusiastically regardless of the current restrictions. Do join us!
